FOREWORD BY ZIG ZIGLAR / Zig and Jean Ziglar with Jerry Smith
That’s a good question. Does God give us more than we can bear?
I’ve known Jerry Smith for quite some time, but until I read his book, I had no idea of the many twists and turns his life has taken. Because I was blessed to be born into and grow up in a large, intact, supportive, and loving family, it is difficult for me to even imagine what it must have been like for Jerry to grow up in numerous households, under varying circumstances, with often unknown parental figures to direct his life. I honestly can’t even conceive of having to search for my mother, to question my parentage, and to seek out siblings, only to be rejected time and time again.
I have often found it amazing how the human spirit can survive as it does. Jerry’s life, from the very beginning, was anything but “normal,” what we in America have come to believe is a wholesome family upbringing. And yet, despite the often traumatic events he has encountered, he looks back over the years with appreciation and gratitude for how the Lord has led, allowed, provided for, and protected him.
Jerry Smith’s story will be an encouragement to any reader. It’s certainly an interesting saga, but of even greater importance, it is a “real-life” example of how the human spirit struggles to survive and thrive. I believe it’s a perfect example of what a huge difference there is when we respond to negative events and situations in our lives, as opposed to reacting to them. How he was able to overcome so many—far more than most experience—negative and unpleasant events can inspire you to do all you can, whatever your situation, to strive to improve your own lot in life. It’s a story of hope—a story that will benefit any reader.
