A Gift for Henry

Posted by: marlaynegiron   in Wish Fulfillment stories

(Below is Henry’s bio written in his own hand)

SEPTEMBER 16, 1972 is a day that I will relive for the rest of my life. It happened at the Withlacoochee River in Florida, about two miles from my house. It was around 2:30 in the afternoon and I was 14 years old.
I had snuck away from the house on my bicycle when I was told I could not to go swimming that day. I met two of my friends on the way to the river as planned, where we had swam many times before. If only I had known what was going to happen that day, I would never have gone! When we got there there was a man, his wife, and their two daughters swimming.
We put our bicycles down, took our shirts and jeans off that we wore over our swimming trunks, and headed down to the river edge and dove in. The water was cool and the current was flowing as usual. We swam back to the river bank and got out of the water. We decided to climb a tree which leaned over the water. We had dove out of that tree many times in the past.
I was the first to climb the tree and dive into the water, followed by my friends. We all swam back to the bank and got out. We climbed the tree again but this time we did a canon ball, swam back, got out again. Then one of my friends asked the other if he wanted to dive off his shoulders. He said yes, so he squatted to let him get on his shoulders and then stood up so he could dive into the river. After he dove in he swam back and as he was getting out he slipped back into water because the bank was getting very slippery. I ran and did a cannon ball again off the bank and as I was getting out, I too noticed that it was not so easy. I slipped a few times before I was finally able to climb back up on the bank. The wet clay was sticking to my feet so I rubbed my feet on the ground and remove most of it. My friend asked if I wanted to dive off of his shoulders and I said, “Sure, why not”. So as he squatted down I climbed onto his shoulders and then he stood up so I could dive into the water.
Just as I was ready to dive, IT HAPPENED!! My right foot slipped off his shoulder and I fell straight down on top of my head and rolled off into the water. I knew immediately that something was wrong. First of all, there was a tingling sensation all over my body, as though a thousand needles were sticking me! Secondly, I could not move anything. I tried so hard, but nothing would move. I KNEW I WAS IN TROUBLE. My body was not responding no matter what I tried. I was in the fetal position (where your arms and knees are drawn up to your chest), floating face down in the water, drifting with the current. I could not see anything but the black water as the river towed me further and further away! You cannot imagine everything that was running through my mind all at the same time! But the main thing that I was thinking was, “I NEED TO BREATHE!” All of my thoughts changed from what was wrong with me to, “I am going to drown if I do not breathe NOW!!!” I could not hold my breath any longer (your body will take a breath whether you want to or not, IN or out of water). I knew that if took a breath my lungs would fill up with water, but I HAD TO BREATH!! I was so terrified by now because I just knew I was going to DIE!!
Just as my body forced me to take a breath, which would have been nothing but water, my friend grabbed me and turned me over. I was finally able to take a breath of air, which felt like I had waited an eternity for! My friend swam back, with me in tow, to where my other friend was waiting to help pull me out of river that had almost taken my life!!! The family that was there swimming took me to the nearest hospital where they said I was now a quadriplegic (you are paralyzed from the neck down and can not feel nothing) and would never walk AGAIN!! That was 37 years ago and I have lived longer than the doctors told me I would. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
God Bless. Henry

 A Gift for Henry…

Henry awakened with a start, his heart pounding and looked around.  For a few seconds all he could do was to stare at the vista which greeted his eyes and then it hit him like a ton a bricks…he was sitting up for the first time by himself since the accident. He opened and shut his eyes slowly several times, the amazing view never changing and then slowly, as if he were afraid he would shatter and break like glass, he bent his neck down and looked at his lower half. Instead of thin, atrophied legs that ignored all of his mind’s commands, there were two tanned and muscular limbs.  Holding his breath…he did something he hadn’t been able to do in decades…he wiggled his toes.

A shout of pure joy issued from his mouth, so loud it even scared himself. “YAHOOOOOO!” Then he did something else he hadn’t done in years…he pinched himself… as hard as he could, right above the hips in the “tickle spot” and practically doubled over with mixed joy and disbelief.

“Vicki!” he shouted, wiggling and wiggling his toes more violently. “Will you look at this? Just look!” There was no answer.  It wasn’t until he found himself standing and then jumping up and down with glee that he really noticed and took stock of his surroundings. The sky was the deepest blue he had ever seen but there was no sun.  Instead an incredibly pure and blazing glow of light originated from everywhere.  In every direction he looked he saw the loveliest terrain he had ever laid eyes on.  Majestic mountains with craggy peaks (but no snow); fields of wildflowers broken only by gurgling brooks which fed into crystal clear lakes; wide open undulating plains of the greenest grass he had ever seen.  No buildings, no bugs (except butterflies), the most delicious smell of orange blossoms permeating the air and a hint of lilting music that seemed to come from everywhere.

“VICKI!” he shouted again, frustrated that his wife was not there to share the experience with him and validate that it was all real.

“She’ll join you later,” responded a deep and profoundly gentle voice. Henry whirled around and instantly fell onto his face upon recognizing who had spoken to him. “Henry, please rise,” said the man, lifting him gently onto his feet. “I want you to enjoy this time I have given you on your feet, not your face.”

At His touch, a surge of strength flowed through Henry’s entire body that was electrifying. He felt like he could run all the way to China and back again and not even get winded.  Jesus smiled a crinkly smile at him and pointed off into the distance. Henry followed with his eyes and saw the most gorgeous tree he had ever laid eyes on.  It was indescribable but even from this distance he could tell it was laden with flowers and fruit; somehow he knew that this is where the lovely perfume was emanating from.

Henry looked back into the face of His blessed Redeemer, his eyes filling with tears and his heart welling with emotion so strong he felt it would burst with joy.  Jesus laid his nail-pierced hand upon his shoulder and Henry felt a thrill pass through him.

“Run, Henry!” Jesus smiled broadly. “Run!”  Despite his desire to not leave his Savior’s side for even a moment, it had been as though the words were more of a command than a suggestion.  The next thing Henry knew his legs were pumping, his arms were flailing and he was racing like a cheetah through the fragrant grass towards what he knew was the Tree of Life, closing the distance faster than he dreamed could be possible.  As he ran, tears of joy flew back in the wind – and a howl of laughter and sheer joy erupted from his throat.  He was running. HE WAS RUNNING!!

He exulted in the sheer joy of feeling his once dead limbs alive and thriving again. Oh… if only the dream would never end…if only he would never have to wake up…but wait…he had pinched himself…and it had hurt. What was going on?  He came to a stop just before the tree, amazed that he wasn’t even breathing hard.  Maybe he wasn’t dreaming…maybe he was…

“You’re not dead, Henry” whispered the voice of Jesus quietly in his ear as if The Master were standing just behind him.  “And you’re not asleep either.  This is my gift to you for now…unwrap it and take it out whenever you feel the need and know that one day soon, it will be yours to enjoy for eternity with all your loved ones who have trusted in Me.”

Henry hung his head and wept, his shoulders heaving with gratitude. The Lord’s voice interrupted his thoughts again. “I have one more gift for you before you leave…if you’ll accept it…”

“Lord,” sobbed Henry. “It is enough that you suffered, died and rose for me and have allowed me to live a life, though broken physically, that has been abundant for you. I will accept whatever gift you want to give me but what can I do in return for you?”

“You have been giving me the best gift for many years, Henry…You.” Replied Jesus, and suddenly Henry turned around to find Jesus standing before him again only he wasn’t dressed in his “typical” biblical clothes but hip-waders and carrying two fishing rods. “I once told Peter, Andrew, James and John that I would make them fishers of men,” he continued with a broad smile that lit up everything about Him. “But today I think that you and I will just go fish for trout in that stream over there. I can guarantee a good catch but as for you …well today you’ll have to clean and fry them up. Deal?”

Henry’s mouth just hung open and then he bellowed with laughter. “Deal!” he exclaimed.

THE END

5 months before accident

Marlayne, by obeying God when he inspired you to write this shory story, you Blessed me. This short story really touched me and Vicki deeply. I feel we are spiritually connected because there are things in this that God knows like orange blossoms being my favorite smell and the part about running. I have always told everyone that when I get to Heaven all I want to do is to be a “go-pher” for God. What I mean is that if all God would have me do is run around Heaven and get Moses or Noah or anyone else, I would not walk but run-run-run! Then ask who would you like to talk to next Father? When I was young and could walk I loved to run and if that was my job I would be greatly honored. And now about fishing, I think I just might out fish Jesus, ha! ha! ha! and still be willing to clean them and fry them up. Marlayne you have a way with words that when you read the story it is as if you are really there and can see everything so clearly. The Bible tells us what Heaven is going to look like but no one can really imagine what Heaven looks like. You know God saved the best for last!!! Thank you so very much for the story and may God keep on blessing you. Love Henry & Vicki.

I want to thank you for this loving story. It really touched me. I haven’t read something that was as touching as this story was in a long time. Henry is my father and he means the world to me. I had to stop several times because it made me cry. You really portrayed my father to a tee. He has always said he that when he gets to heaven that he will never walk but run. As for the fishing I think it would be an honor to fish with Jesus. I know that would be something that my dad would really love. I again want to thank you for this story and may god bless and inspire you to write more stories like these. Take care and God Bless.

Thank you for writing this short story about my Dad. The story is very well written and poignant. When he was telling me about it I could tell that he was deeply touched, as was I, that somebody would take the time to do something this special for him. Hopefully by posting this on your website, along with the others you have posted, you will be able to touch somebody else in the same condition/situation and let them know that there is life after this life. And that even though we suffer and are tried in this life, that the next life will be unbelievably satisfying. Your stories convey that God knows without being told what we desire. I applaud you for donating your time and offering your service to others to afford them the same opportunity. To write a story like this for somebody or their loved one(s), and do it out of the kindness of your heart, is very commendable. Thank you again and may God bless you and yours.

Thank you for doing this story for Henry, you have made him proud. He has been through a lot since his accident. Many times we were called by the doctors who said he wouldnt live through the night. They were wrong - God was there all the time. God had other plans. That plan was for Henry to serve Him. Now, he may not walk again on earth But he will walk in HEAVEN.

Thank you for giving to the Lord with your gift and talent of writting. Henry’s story was very touching - and God inspired - see I have talked with my brother about what he wants to do in Heaven - and God really spoke to your heart about his desires. The word of God tells us that if we delight ourselves in Him that He will give us the desires of our heart - I beleive that. See I was only 2 when Henry was hurt, and I do not remember Henry ever walking - but I have never looked at my brother as being a “Handicapped” person, because he always would prove to you that he could do something if you tried to say he couldn’t - so I never really gave much thought to his not walking until one day when we were going through some old pictures when I lived with him after I had graduated from high school. I pulled and old picture from the box and it was one of the last pictures that he had made before he was hurt, but he was STANDING UP! I was 18 years old at the time, and this was the first time I had ever seen him standing - ever! I never told him - but something inside me changed at that moment - I seen a side of Henry that I never seen before. See, Henry and I have always been very close growing up. He was the oldest and I was the baby - I can remember when most siblings would have relay races and such we would all go down to the pond and race Henry in his electric wheel chair back to our Grandma’s house either on foot or on our bikes - we would go mud slinging in Henry’s “jigger” (we would strap him in) - so we had fun together and I never looked as us ever lacking in being able to do things together - but I have never been able to take a walk with him, run a race, play kick ball, even though he did subject us all to “Father May I” growing up - Ha, Ha!!!
BUT PRAISE GOD!!! ONE GLORIOUS DAY - ONE DAY SOON - I’M GONNA WALK- NO RUN THE STREETS OF GOLD WITH MY BROTHER - NO MORE WHEEL CHAIRS - NO MORE HANDICAP VANS - NO MORE MUSCLE SPASMS - NO MORE CONFINEMENTS TO THE THINGS THAT THE ENEMY PUTS UPON US - WE WILL BE FREE!!! ALL BECAUSE OF OUR PRECIOUS LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST!!!

THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!

Henry called me and asked me if I would read his story. And the story you wrote was touching and beautiful and the words were perfect. I have know him for about 32 years. He is a big teddy bear with a big heart. Henry is blessed to have a beautiful wife, Vicki, that is always by his side and always there for him. I put a link to you Web site on my facebook. Henry asked me to let you know.

Thank you for writing so eloquently about a story of tragedy. I’m Henry’s sister Elaina. Our world as we knew it came to a sudden halt, that September day. I remember like it was yesterday, everyone wondered “Why God why”? But his wisdom is far greater than ours. Out of this tragedy came faith, hope, and inspiration. Unlike the families that separate after a tragedy like this one. Our family grew stronger and closer each day with God’s grace and help. Without Him there is no telling where this family would be today. This is the path that God has Set for all of us it seems, but we are here together and will be until God calls us home. (And when we get to HEAVEN we will all go fishing with Henry)

That was a touching story, even though I have heard it before, it still got to me. It shows how grateful we should all be. The author did a wonderful job of showing how my Uncle Henry has tried to live his life.

I Love you Granddaddy! - Arianna . Thank You so much for taking the time to write this up it means so much to me I wish you the best.

I did not read all of the other comments not even my wife’s, so I’m not influenced by any of them. I understand the heavenly aspect of the story, but if I may lets look at the earthly. Not all of the greatest gifts await us in heaven. So many of GOD’S greatest gifts can be found here on earth if we will just recognize them. We all know the greatest gift God gave us was his Son, the only way to the Father. Jesus said while on earth A NEW COMMANDMENT I GIVE UNTO YOU, THAT YE LOVE ONE ANOTHER; AS I HAVE YOU,THAT YE ALSO LOVE ONE ANOTHER. BY THIS SHALL ALL MEN KNOW THAT YE ARE MY DISCIPLES, IF YE HAVE LOVE ONE TO ANOTHER. John 13:34-35 It seems only right to me that Henry would call for Vicki. Just as Jesus’ love for all mankind was strong enough that he gave his life, Vicki’s love for Henry is strong enough that she has gave her life for him. You see Henry sees Jesus through is wife Vicki every day. Love one another as I have loved you. Just as Jesus gave his life, Vicki gave her life. There are many men who have the use of there arms and legs and lots more, but they don’t have Jesus nor the love of a Godly women, Henry you have both.

I was 7 years old at the time of Henry’s accident, but I remember the day very vividly. Thank you for writing such a beautiful and touching story for Henry. All things are possible through the love of God. All things happen in life for a reason and although we may not understand what those reasons are we must accept and learn from them and know that Our Heavenly Father will take care of us. Henry may never walk on this Earth, but we all will walk with him when we return home to be with Our Heavenly Father. What a glorious day that will be!

Thank you very much for writing this story it is very touching. My uncle has got to be one of the strongest people I know though he cannot walk - he is the strongest. He has taught me that no matter what’s wrong with you, you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it. He has taught me that God works in very weird ways but His ways are the best and He knows what He is doing, that’s why he is God. But there have been times that the doctor told us that he would not make it through the night but God pulled him through and here he is. You can learn alot from this man. Uncle Henry, I love you! Thank you for every thing you have taught me.

Henry’s life has been a Powerful, Riveting and Inspirational one. My cousin has been an influential part of my life, for thirty seven (37) years now. Henry has given me and many others guidance that we use today. I would like to see Henry be able to tell his complete story to the world one day. I praise God for not taking Henry from us on that day and allowing him to touch so many lives in a positive and spiritual way.

I remember well when Henry got hurt. I was called at work to go to the hospital, that he was in a very bad way. I can remember the doctor saying that he needed to be transferred to Lakeland Hospital for treatment that could not be done to him in Dade City. While in the ER in Lakeland I was told by the Dr. just how serious his condition was, and that they would do what they could to relieve some of the stress on his spine. The Doctor also stated that we could prepare for the worse due to the vertebrae that was shattered in his neck. We were told the first 48 hrs would be a very critical time, because his injury was a type that was very likely to cause death. At that time we put our trust in the Lord to guide the neuro-surgeon’s hand. As you can see many prayer’s were answered, because Henry is still with us 37 years later. Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a touching story for Henry. It touched not only Henry, but all of us in his family very much.

I met Henry through Facebook. We started out with everyday conversations, and we became good friends. Then he asked me if I knew his story. I did not and he shared with me the tragedy he went through. As I read the lines, tears began to well up in my eyes. How could God let this young man of 14 years of age become a quadrapligic? But it was Henry that eased my pain. He told me how God has blessed him since the tragedy. He stated he was able to help others because of it. I learned much from his story. It is that God has things happen to us for a purpose. Anything that we have to face is for a reason. I also have had my own bouts with tragedy. I was near death before I had an emergency quadruple by-pass surgery. I have had 5 other major surgeries over the last five or six years. As each one comes I praise God even more. I have a new story to share on how God has saved my life, and how He can help others too. Thank you Henry for being my friend and Christian brother. If I need someone to share during some down moments I know who I can turn too. God bless you my friend.

I am Henry’s oldest cousin. I have known Henry all of his life. He used to play with my younger brothers who were about the same age. I had moved to Utah in 1970 to go to college, and remember getting that heart-breaking phone call from my mother telling me about his accident. They didn’t know if he would survive or not, but thanks to his strong will to live, he fought to stay here on this earth with us. I do believe there are angels among us, and Henry is one of them. His life has been difficult for him, but he has endured all of his pain and frustrations with grace and honor. When you hear that deep strong voice of his, you would never know the suffering he has endured. When I listen to him speak, I can tell that he knows God loves him and he knows that he was sent here for a special purpose…to bless the lives of all of us who know and love him. We are all sent to this life to be tested, and Henry has certainly past his test! I know that Heavenly Father has a special place in the next life for him. I am so proud to be his cousin, He has touched so many people through his story and his life. Thanks for being our angel and thanks for touching our lives with your presence. When you get to heaven, I’m sure you will be running and fishing, too. (Your Uncle Joe will be sitting by you on the bank of the river with a cane pole in his hand and a smile on his face with his favorite nephew.) Thank you for inspiring all of us. I love you. Ree

I had heard of Henry’s tragic circumstance from Ree many, many years ago. Not knowing Henry personally, I could only relate through whatever Ree was feeling. Reading his story has given me additional perspective on how our lives can turn in an instant….. sometimes of our own doing, sometimes through the acts of others. God has granted all of us the agency to make choices and to listen and act on his counsels…. or not. I am eternally grateful for the sacrifice of His Son for all of us that makes it possible to be with God and Jesus Christ again. I wish this sense of gratitude and love would pervade the whole earth but alas it does not.

The story of Henry and his personal Savior is also touching and inspired.

Henry, keep faithful and continue to stay the course.

Robert
