Why add a link to cancer societies and blogs? Because it is a battle that we have been enduring on a personal level for the past year with my wife.  There also seems to be an epedimic of people we know that have also had various forms of cancer.  Unfortunately, a number of people that will come to this site will also be facing some form of cancer in the future.

The first stop for any cancer related info is the American Cancer Society.

Breast Cancer Blog

My Wife’s Personal Battle With Breast Cancer over the past year was  documented on her blog.  She handled her cancer with great faith and there are a number of funny stories and encouraging notes that she wrote to others along the way.  She has left the blog in cyberspace in case someone that needs it will run across it and might help them on their journey with breast cancer.  Her blog gives a timeline (starting at the bottom right and read up by date order) from finding the suspicious mammogram, to finding out she had invasive ductal carcinoma that required her to undergo a mastectomy.  She opted to have immediate breast reconstruction on April 6, 2009 and elected not to have chemo.

FREE Lymphedema Alertbands - Peninsula Medical

March 5th, 2010. Published under Fighting Cancer. No Comments.

This great company gives away free lymphedema alertbands if you need one.  My wife ordered one before her last surgery to wear in the hospital.  It is great to use in the hospital to alert nurses of your condition.

From their website:

FREE LE Alertband

Prior to any medical procedure it is imperative that patients with lymphedema or at risk to develop lymphedema, have a mechanism to alert medical professionals of their condition. Many times a patient is sedated or under anesthesia and can not protect or prevent at risk procedures such as, injections, blood draws, IV insertion, blood pressure readings ect. By donning a brightly colored Lymphedema Alertband on their wrist or ankle this will alert technicians to the risk. Although there are medical alert jewelry, in a medical setting, this can be overlooked as jewelry and not bring the desired attention to the extremity.

Peninsula Medical will send, at no charge, an alertband to any patient with or at risk of developing lymphedema. The band will accommodate up to 9 1/2 inches/24 centimeters. If your extremity is larger than this, please indicate the circumference of your ankle or wrist so that we can provide extra bands that snap together in order to accommodate a larger circumference. If two extremities are involved, please indicate this so that two bands can be sent.

Lymphedema is not curable, but it is treatable, controllable and there are preventative measures that can be taken to help protect patients from worsening and to lesson the risk of infection. If you have not yet viewed our Risk Reduction links, please click here. Education and Prevention is within reach!
